Abstract: For De Lubac, the expression 'the people of God' does not express with clarity the novelty or the discontinuity of the Church in relation to the people of God of the Old Testament. In both his works, Catholicism and Paradox and Mystery of the Church, he prefers to emphasize that the Church is not a new creation but a radical transformation of the ancient people of God effected by Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

From this perspective he criticized Vatican IIs Dogmatic Constitution on the Church which, according to him, uses the expression people of God to underline the continuity of the two Testaments. Talking of the transition from the people of the Old Testament to that of the New Testament does not sufficiently affirm the novelty of the transformation.

The expression people of God' in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church refers to the whole Christian community composed of ordinary believers and their leaders (pastors) which together form the only Church of Christ. With this conception of the people of God', Vatican II underlines the elements that are common to all members C clergy, laity, and religious C of the only people of God: unity, and especially the essential equality within the hierarchical structure of the Church. Therefore, the use of the expression people of God manifests in the first place the overcoming of a juridical and totalitarian ecclesiology, and, in the second place, it also suggests the continuity between the people of the Old Testament and the people of the New Testament.
